Alexander I (1801-1825)

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1935
Russia. Alexander I (1777-1825). Son of Paul I and grandson of Catherine the Great. Alexander alternately befriended and fought Napoleon I, but ultimately helped to defeat him. He took part in the Congress of Vienna. His attemps to institute liberal reforms were hindered by the resistance of the Russian nobility and the later years of his reign were marked by popular discontent.

Imperial Decree Signed as Czar of Russia, March 28, 1825, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 12½ x 7½ in. In Russian, to the Chapter of Russian Orders, commanding that the medals and document of the order of Saint Vladimir, 4th class, be presented to Senior Surveyor of Mines 7th class Grigoriy Spasskiy, on whom the czar has bestowed the title of Cavalier. Pencilled notes at lower edge of document, else very fine. With translation.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Lot 1938
Russia. Ruble, 1818-SPB PS. Bitkin-H-96/97; Dav-281; Cr-130. Alexander I. Lettered edge. This specimen is sharply struck with handsome old toning in steel blue and russet. A few of the design's highest points on the reverse are slightly flat due to the lapping of the novodel dies. This feature does not detract in the slightest and in fact is instructive as to the procedures utilized during the production process. Bitkin has categorized this type as a Rarity 4, indicating that only 2 or 3 specimens are believed to exist. We cannot imagine a finer one than the Excessively Rare example here offered for your bidding pleasure. PCGS graded Proof 66.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.

Lot 1977
Russia. Nicholas I (1796-1855). Nicholas was the third son of Paul I and brother of Alexander I, who died childless. Nicholas was dictatorial and paternalistic, but he did make efforts to stabilize the ruble and reduce the growing national debt. His attempts to dominate the Ottoman Empire led to the Crimean War (1853-56).

Royal Edit Signed as Czar of Russia, February 20, 1832, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 12¼ x 7½ in. In Russian, to the Capitulum of Russian Imperial and Royal Orders, stating that he has conferred the title of Cavalier of the second degree Order of St. Anne on the Royal Prussian Privy Councillor of the Court, Schneider, and instructing that the insignia and charter be issued to him. Very fine condition. With translation.

Lot 1978
Russia. Platinum 12 Rubles, 1835-SPB. Bitkin-47; Sev-618; Fr-158; Cr-179. Nicholas I. Mintage: 127 pieces. Crowned double headed eagle holding sceptre and orb. On the breast is a shield with the St. George & Dragon motif surrounded by a St. Andrew Collar. Provincial coats-of-arms on the wings. Reverse: Value and date within a crenelated circle, legend around. Very sharply struck with semi-frosted devices amid brilliant proof fields. All platinum issues appeared during the reign of Nicholas I (1825-55), including some experimental coronation medals and jetons of 1826 and a unique half rouble of the same date using regular dies. The regulation coinage began in 1828 with 3 rouble coins, the 6 roubles coming in 1829 and the 12 roubles added one year latter in 1830. Minting in this metal continued until 1845 when an imperial ukase ordered complete cessation of platinum coinage and a total recall of existing coinage in circulation within a 6 month period due in part to their unpopularity with the public. The minting of 12 roubles began in 1830 and were struck every year until 1845. The mintages ranged from a high of 1463 pieces in 1831 to only one coin in 1840. Most mintages were less than 127, with only three years above that amount, 1831, 1832 and 1833. Proofs exist of several dates, but there seems to be no published record of the numbers struck, though they must be very tiny indeed. The 1835 is rated R3, with 4 to 9 examples estimated to exist. We suggest that within that estimated range, few, if any, will be this choice, especially a proof of near gem quality. PCGS graded Proof 64.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 25,000.

Lot 1979
Russia. Pattern 10 Rubles, 1836-SPB. Bitkin-H825; Sev-424; Fr-153. By Gube. Nicholas I. Conjoined busts of Czar Nicholas I and Czarina Alexandra facing left. Reverse: Value and date within a beaded circle with legend around. Friedberg lists a mintage of 36 pieces and all were likely struck as proofs, as we believe this coin is. They were possibly intended as mementos for distribution to family and friends of the imperial court. Nicholas I acceded to the throne in 1825 after the death of his older brother Alexander I who died childless. Grand Duke Constantine, Paul I's second son, who was next in the line of succession had secretly renounced the throne in 1822 after marrying a Polish aristocrat and the resulting confusion led to a military conspiracy against Nicholas, the so-called Decembrist Uprising, which he suppressed ruthlessly. Nicholas married Frederica Louisa Charlotta Wilhelmina, daughter of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, becoming Alexandra Feodorovna, and had seven children with her. He died on February 18, 1855 and some historians believe he committed suicide by poison after receiving news of the defeat of Russian forces at the Battle of Evpatoria during the Crimean War. This coin's designer, Heinrich Gube (his name at the truncation of the Nicholas bust) had worked in Berlin with the Loos firm and in 1830 was appointed by imperial edict to the position of Chief Engraver & Medallist at the Saint Petersburg Mint. He produced many important coins and medals during his tenure and his life like rendering of the imperial couple on this 10 Rubles attest to his considerable talent as an engraver. Extremely Rare; Bitkin R3, with 4 to 9 pieces estimated to be extant. PCGS graded MS-62.

Russia. (under Poland). 10 Zlotych or 1 ½ Rubles, 1833-NG (St. Petersburg). Bitkin-1048; Dav-284; Sev-3029; Cr-134. Nicholas I. Condition conscious collectors, for whom acquiring the best of the best is of paramount importance, will want to pay particular attention to this lot. It is quite simply a spectacular specimen, fully struck with perfect surfaces and lovely old iridescent toning. These large 10 Zlotys, intended for use in Poland, were first struck at St. Petersburg in 1833, continuing uninterrupted until 1841. Their counterparts of similar design struck at Warsaw, began 2 years later in 1835 and were also struck each year until 1841, providing a 7 year series for the Polish minted coins versus a 9 year series for the Russian version. This Superb Gem Proof is without doubt among the finest known of the type and may well be the finest in existence. PCGS graded Proof 67.
